SCCC
September 2000 Sioux Scope

NOTICE - Meeting is at 7:30 on Thursday, September 7, Morningside Reformed Church, 5601 Sunnybrook Drive.

WELCOME TO A GREAT NEW YEAR OF CAMERA CLUB

It's time to say wecome back for another year of camera club. I hope everyone has had a good and photographically fruitful summer and is looking forward to another stimulating winter season of programs, judging, and fellowship. PLEASE TAKE NOTE OF THE FIRST MEETING DATE! This change to our usual schedule was necessary because of our upcoming N4C convention.

For those who have not yet registered for the convention, time is growing short. Get those registration forms filled out and sent in. Work on the convention is progressing nicely. All the volunteers have been working hard to make this a top notch gathering, and one we all should look forward to attending.

We must say a big THANK YOU again to Larry and Marcia Crabb for hosting the summer potluck and convention meeting at their house. As always the hospitality was warm and generous, the day was beautiful, the food delicious, and the company and conversation with friends enjoyable.

Tom Atkinson, Sioux Scope Editor

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

The meeting will be on Thursday the 7th at 7:30 PM. The program that night will be done by everyone. The name of the program is Home Made Gadgets for photography. Anybody who has a gadget that they want to share with the club should bring it along and show it off that night.

N4C entries in all categories need to be turned in by September 5th. You can bring them to the last convention meeting that night. -- Steven Peterman

ARCHIVING DIGITAL - SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT

The Gold-Based CO.

Archiving photos in the new digital age is not so simple. It's generally known that magnetic media is not stable for long periods, whether you use the new memory sticks or cards, zip disks, or your computer's hard drive. But not all CDs are equally stable, either. Dye-based CDs are considered reliable for three to five years, according to Tom Beecher, image capture specialist for Kodak. Dyes eventually fade, and any digital photos you've stored on such CDs will become irretrievable. Gold-based CDs, on which digital information is burned with a laser, are considered "image permanent." Of course, with the rate of change of all things computer related, there may be no devices to read even gold-based CDs in a few years. Remember the Syquest disks, the graphicsindustry standard, just a few years ago?
