November Program
LONDON SALON TO VISIT SCCC
According to Francis Kingsbury, the London Salon will be a visitor at the
November meeting of the SCCC. Well not really, but the club will be
viewing 78 slides selected for a traveling show representing a typical
view of the nearly 200 accepted prints. A tape commentary by Roy King, a
member of the Salon, will accompany the slide presentation.. The London
Salon of Photography was formed in 1910 stemming from another
photographic group called the Linked Ring, organized in 1892. The Linked
Ring was born out of a protest against the too lax selection by the
Royal Photographic Society. In due time the Linked Ring developed
different viewpoints regarding the selection of entries and two divergent
groups held their own beliefs . There existed an opposition to entries
from American and other foreign photographers as well as differing
opinions as to the distinctive qualities or lack there of, in the
photographs exhibited. From this troublesome beginning, there developed
two groups, the London Secession and the London Salon with the Secession
group lasting only a few years. Today the London Salon follows
very closely, the constitution of the Linked group, having as their sole
public activity the exhibition called the London Salon of Photography.
As might be expected, membership in the London Salon is conferred and
cannot be applied for. It is regarded as one of the highest honors that a pictorial photographer can achieve. The showing for SCCC will
be divided into two sections with the popular coffee break between
sessions. In addition to the London Salon a mini exhibit will be
displayed of some of Jean Card's hand colored prints. Jean was a master
at hand coloring, and a consistent winner in SCCC and also N4C. DON'T MISS
THIS DIFFERENT AND INTERESTING PROGRAM.
